About Me
Founding Director of Instinctively Wild CIC (IW), Professional of Outdoor Learning- Institute of Outdoor Learning. Nature Journalist and Bushcrafter.
How did I get into the outdoors?
I have always been in the outdoors. Iβm of that generation that played outdoors all day as a kid. No internet, no smartphones, no social media.
As a kid I went walking in the Lake District with my family every weekend. Got into photography and that lead me into my first career in photography and a skill that underpins my art/nature journaling.
Much, much later in life, I trained to be a teacher only really because I always wanted a job doing environmental education.
It was whilst I was on Forest Schools training in 2006 in Edinburgh, that I thought - βwhy am I waiting for the right environmental education job - why donβt I do it myselfβ. So that is what I did - researched it - eventually setting up IW. Sixteen years later still doing it, specialise in Forest Schools, Eco-therapy, Bushcraft and Nature Journalling. Although in the last few years I have become personally more specialised in Nature Journaling and Bushcraft.
I was awarded the status of Professional of Outdoor Learning by the Institute of Outdoor Learning.
Running a CIC is not easy, I do it around my teaching job - which has sometimes been full time over the years. Iβve taken a phased retirement from the teaching- Iβm most definitely on my way out from that career.
If I could do just Nature Journalling and Bushcraft forever I would be happy with that. However anyone that knows the world of the third sector will know that the reality of that is - grants/selling/marketing - doing a lot of admin and paperwork behind the scenes - usually unpaid.
Favourite adventure or experience?
IW - Have loads of memories, countless for all the people we/IW has helped or made a difference too over the years. For my Nature Journaling- being interviewed by BBC Scotland - Artist paints daily nature journal for 16 months: check it out here
One mindset or bit of kit I always take with me?
I always have a Bothy Bag, and space blanket, mini inflatable roll mat. I was first aider once to someone who had broken their leg on a footpath in Lancashire. I had with me my Forest Schools Emergency Bag. When the Mountain Rescue and Air Ambulance came they thought I was part of the emergency team. When I said I was a passer by and did not know the person, they were taken aback by all the kit I had. So from that day my day rucksack always has stuff that would be useful in a similar situation.
I also always carry my nature journaling kit. Watercolour log books and a roll of Derwent Inktense pencils. Small amount of water and brushes. Binoculars.
What am I looking for?
Just looking to connect with individuals/organisations on a similar path. My time is limited - so would be interested in a consulting type role - that I can do remotely. Advising/supporting on project/organisational development.
IW - I am looking for new Volunteer Directors and Volunteer Research Volunteers also. Get in touch for more info.
