Meet MarΓa
MarΓa OrdovΓ‘s-MontaΓ±Γ©s πOxford/London
About Me
Iβm a science-trained (PhD in biology) storyteller and projects/programmes person, bilingual in English and Spanish, pivoting into nature-connected work, especially related to the ocean and waterways.
I learned to scuba dive in Dahab, Egypt last autumn, and my favourite part was a Fish Surveying course where I learned how to identify coral reef life. I later wrote an βUnderwater Detectiveβ piece for the Scuba Seekers blog (you can see it in my portfolio).
Two of my favourite projects have been related to public engagement and communication: visitor research for the βBacterial Worldβ exhibition at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and audio storytelling production for the Out There Podcast (including a personal narrative that won an award from the Society of Professional Journalists).
I love translating complex ideas into compelling narratives and Iβm happiest in roles that combine creative thinking with practical delivery. Iβm especially drawn to stories where unexpected βmain charactersβ turn distant environmental problems into immediate, felt experiences.
How did I get into the outdoors?
Most recently, scuba diving made ocean conservation feel more tangible and urgent to me, and it nudged me toward ocean literacy and environmental storytelling. Iβm currently exploring underwater bioacoustics and Iβm producing an audio story about the first time I heard coral crackling.
Favourite adventure or experience?
Seeing my first kingfisher. It was a very hot summer day and I was swimming in the Cherwell with a friend when a bright blue bird darted low over the water. Since then, Iβve kept track of every kingfisher sighting (70 and counting) and Iβm always scanning around the Thames Path for flashes of blue.
One mindset or bit of kit I always take with me?
My Nalgene water bottle with a pajama nudibranch sticker from Scuba Seekers and a mountain pika sticker from Kula Cloth.
What am I looking for?
Iβm looking for full-time or part-time work (and Iβm open to a short contract as a stepping stone) in communications, storytelling, or audience engagement with mission-led organisations connected to the ocean and waterways. Iβm also open to wider outdoors/nature-access work where public-facing storytelling is important.
Iβm especially interested in roles that translate science into stories people feel, and I love collaborative, idea-rich teams. A great work moment for me looks like a lively whiteboard brainstorm with excited colleagues. Plus a table full of stickered reusable bottles.
Longer term, Iβm also interested in natural history development research for documentaries.
If you are hiring, know of a comms/engagement team that is hiring, or someone who commissions environmental stories, Iβd really appreciate a message or introduction.
